Had we had the opportunity to execute our plan, we had a great line-up. We were going to begin with a video of our community narrated by Rosa. Then address the issue of our community to our audience and provide the data we researched of Los Angeles County occupations. We had guest speakers lined up to share their experience and information on how we can as a community work together to bring these programs into our schools. We had Golden Gears who were going to come in and provide a demonstration of their robotics program.
Civic Engagement
We spoke to Ms. Rodriguez the STEM coordinator and got an opportunity to share our concerns with an outside community in the city of Lynwood, Ca. This group of parents allowed us to communicate our mission statement and the need of our project. We also had the opportunity to speak to parents throughout parent night providing sufficient information to other SLC’s that are not part of Magnet.
Outcomes
We reached out to 50 adults and over 100 students. The adults were a combination of the community in Lynwood and the parents we were able to invite to our outreach workshop from the parent conference night. Students were reached by walking into classes from our coordinator and inviting students to come out to our outreach workshop on March 26th and to bring their parents.
We hoped by raising awareness we could work closely with administration to push for more funding and opportunities to provide the children of our audience parents, the future students of Fremont High School. We want to use our community to help alleviate the nation's minority STEM gap representation.
